add this to the one below. Thank you!

ABC Home and Carpet in NYC
Some pic. that display the typical looks of the store.

Very funky tables...I bet some of these would fall into the green design category.
So this is more or less a continuation of the post below..how the whole interest in everything green came about--for me that is:)

In addition to reading Silent Spring (more or less around senior year) I also had the most amazing opportunity to do a three day shadow at House and Garden Mag. in NYC w/ it's then senior editor Jen Renzi(check her out-she writes some verryy cool stuff too!!). These three days kicked my butt into high gear as far as green design is considered. It just so happened that the mag.'s issues that month focused on green design. So we spent those three days running all over the city..checking out green buildings(I know..living in a green apt. in NYC-totally cool!!), going to various green product design get-togethers (and actually meeting the owners of a handful of these companies!) and checking in on a green themed photo shoot at ABC Home-the best interior design store in NYC!! It was pretty much an AMAZING experience.

Some of the products featured at the get-together's included baby cloths, toys and bassinets all made from recycled fibers, such as bamboo and certain types of organic cotton. If you think about it, shouldn't all baby stuff be made from organic materials? It's clean, healthy, non-toxic, recycled(in a good way)....and oh yeah "green". There were also a ton of other very cool products. Such as clothing and home goods. I wish I had some pics. of some of this stuff! I'll have to dig through my notes and see if I can locate the names of several company's in attendance and put up some cool pics of their current products. There were also several architects in attendance. Which reminds me of Michelle Kaufmann Designs, LED paint and all the cool stuff taking place at the museum of Science and Industry in Chicago..but that's another post talking.

The things that got me interested in "going green!"

During the summer before my senior year of high school, I had to read a 'Silent Spring' by Rachel Carson. To say it was one of the best books I have ever read, well that's a bit of an understatement. It was completely eye-opening--amazing!! We had to write a paper on it, due the first day of class and I spend like half of our family vacation sitting in this little coffee shop reading and writing my paper(which I did very well on might I add:).
The book depicts the effects of DDT on the environment. It also discuses the effects of other harmful pesticides on the environment and basically started the environmental movement back in the '70's. It also was the main push behind the ban on DDT, established in 1972. Carson discussed the effects these chemicals had on animals living in the sprayed areas as well as the effects it was having on fish/water creatures-both local and non. By getting into our water supply it was not only causing a ton of harm to the animals that called that lake or river home but it was also getting into our own water supply.
There is so much I can say about this book, but I don't want to give it all away. Pick up a copy and give it a read! For anyone interested in 'going green' and learning the history as to why we are "going green", it is a fabulious read. You can probably find it on amazon.com or at your local library-check it out!!

My first blog post!!

So I decided to create this blog to do just that, blog. I wanted to have a place where I could discuss various issues and interests, especially green design and the media (will most-likely focus on the producing end of film/tv) and everything thing in between. Let this be the first of many posts to come. Happy blogging!!
